    Very na├»ve question – why are molds made with soft materials? Why not make them from a hard material that wears better?

    Because these items are created for film production they are not engineered for mass production. Having a flexible mold allows for the those areas where you have undercuts which would make it impossible to remove the part from a hard mold.
