Steve, who made that Skydiver kit?
Sorry if you mentioned it before, maybe I didn’t catch it.

And are you sure that’s an inner child you have? Maybe it never went in! 😉

Good call using the Enterprise-D from Generations for color matching, since that’s the original Enterprise-D. It’s the 6-foot model built by ILM when the series was in pre-production. (they also built a 2-foot model, which was used for forced perspective shots and a few other shots where they literally couldn’t use the 6-foot model) That model was used right through season 3 and, much to the dismay of the effects people in the season premiere of season 4, since they needed a model that separated and that was the only one that did. The other “big” model, which was built by Greg Jein and company, was a 4-foot model built for season 4, to be an easier to shoot model. It has subtle differences, including all of that raised detailing that you see on the kit’s hull. Somebody thought it would be a good idea to give the ship a “bumpy” texture, so they did that with layered paint. Aside from that, there are also other subtle differences. I don’t know if the Captain’s Yacht was different, but that may be why you have two of those. (yes, I know way more than I should about this model 😛 )

They needed the 6-foot model for Generations, not only for the separation scene, but also because it met the needs of movie resolutions, where the 4-foot model wasn’t considered as highly detailed as was needed for the movie. That’s why it appears in the film and that’s why it’s a great choice to use for colors, because that model is the original. 😀
